TURF BURN 2023 - RULES

The "TURF BURN" 7-A-Side adult soccer tournament is a recreational soccer tournament aimed at providing a fun and enjoyable weekend of soccer for all players, fans and volunteers.

  • Players:
    1. All teams must complete the online team Roster prior to the start of their first game. All players must be registered members in Urban Rec  before participating in game play. For the playoffs, players can be added up until the start of the team’s 1st playoff game.
  • Rules of Play - FIFA rules of play apply with the following exceptions:
    1. Sliding and slide tackles are not permitted under any circumstance. If a player leaves their feet at any time, they must land back on their feet, or a foul will be called and a Yellow Card issued.
    2. Goaltenders can slide to meet the ball with hands or torso but cannot slide feet first.
    3. Drop kicks or punts are not permitted from goaltenders
    4. The number of players on the field per team is 7 including the goalkeeper. Team must have at least 2 women and 1 man on the field at all times in order to field a full lineup. Goal Keepers can be male or female, but do not count towards the minimum gender requirements.
    5. Playing time consists of 2 halves of 25 minutes with a 5-minute half time break.
    6. There are no off sides.
    7. Subbing on the fly should happen at the half line. If a team gains an immediate advantage by having a sub enter the field before the other player is off, it will be treated like a foul.
    8. The ball is brought into play from the sidelines by a kick-in; kick-ins are in-direct.
    9. Corner kicks are direct kicks
    10. If a red card is issued or two yellow cards are issued to the same player in one game, the player will be required to leave the field and will be suspended from participating in the following game. The team may not adjust their male/female ratio. In this instance, the team will not be allowed to replace the penalized player on the field for the remainder of the game.
    11. A player receiving a second red card will be expelled from the tournament.
    12. Shin pads are required.
    13. Points will be awarded as follows: three points for a win, one point for a tie. Standings at the end of the preliminary games will be determined by points, in the event there is a tie goal differential will be used.
  • Playoffs
    1. In the event of a tied score at the end of a playoff game, a 5 round shootout will commence (teams must alternate men and women each round). If there is still a tie after 5 rounds, sudden death rounds will decide the game.
    2. Playoff draw to be determined after all round robin games have been completed.
    3. For Playoffs on Sunday, a player must pick ONE TEAM to play on. They will be considered ‘Cup Tied’ to the first team they play for. 
    4. Once a team has been eliminated from the playoffs, participants from those teams cannot join other teams.
